Movie review time, dearers, oops readers!
3-Idiots: The famous Aamir Khan movie which has made Aamir very amir. (Forgive me for the poor humour. But it is best to start with the worst possible joke. One doesn't build hopes.) A movie with a message, like the past many movies of Aamir have been. Only I am not sure what the message was! Yes, our education system needs to be changed. True! But after seeing the education system in the movie, one wonders -- why again?
The system shown in the movie is such that: if one is deeply interested in science and engineering that person scores the highest! (In some sense exams make sure this happens.) And those who are not interested or are there just to mug up stuff don't come even close to getting good marks. A system as flawless as this needs to be changed, really? I am amazed! The system shown in the movie is far from reality. In fact, for that matter, anything else shown in the movie is far from reality! Yes yes, that is not the point of the movie. Movies are suppose to entertain. Fair enough! Then why not watch Yuvvraj, which is out and out an entertainer. No pretensions about being deep and well-thought out. If the movie was not out there to give a deep message and I was just to sit and enjoy the comic scenes, I would be glad having seen this movie. The irritating part about 3-Idiots was it was trying hard to be a "movie with a message". Give me a break!
Kareena Kapoor or for that matter all Bollywood heroins satisfy themselves with 3 crore ruppees (hell, that's lot of money, I am simply jealous!) and 3 emotional scenes and general modelling their figures through the movie. It is not even important that they have a role. They are there because without them the glam-factor will reduce. Where is your self-respect woman? Oh right! Doesn't matter.
Aamir's character is build to be so irritating. He is overly self-righteous. He is always giving free advice to people, never making any mistakes, even his coldness has a warm story under it and all the good things in general. I am happy, real people are not all good.
The high point of the movie is Chatur! This desi-boy, Omi Vaidya, has absolutely rocked in the movie. I wonder whether Hindi cinema will ever be able to offer him lead roles.
The director has made better movies before this. Munna Bhai Lage raho was definitely a better movie. When the quality and returns don't match, one tends to make wrong deductions. This is the main reason why the movie industry in India is in such a pathetic state (quality-wise). I fear there will be more of 3-Idiots and less of Munna bhais. (This is not to say that Munna Bhai was the best movie ever or some such.)
So let me qualify "better": Character development is one of the main duties of the script writer and the director. There are two suicides (one successful and one attempt) in the movie, but one never feels sad for either. There is a pain in Kareena's character, a daughter who thinks her father is a reason for her brother's death. That pain never comes across. One needs to explicitly told that Madhavan is interested in photography. He is shown to click snaps of puppies the day he enters the campus. But never again, till an explicit mention, is he seen with a camera. All the teachers are bad. All the students are nice people except those who mug up stuff. Are we done with painting the world black and white already? (No pun intended... or may be it is.)
There is one more terrible thing that this movie has done to me. It has increased my craving to go back and visit Himalayas. (Put in a more positive way, the landscapes and over all camera work needs to be appreciated.)
All in all, the movie does give one message. The current Bollywood system needs to be changed! (see I ended with a far better joke, didn't I?)
