Breaking News: Sri Ram Sena takes over

Under a hypothetical situation where Sri Ram Sena becomes the central ruling party of India, following will be the rules (closely resembling/ inspired(!) from the rules of Taliban) for women:

1- Complete ban on women's work outside the home, which also applies to female teachers, engineers and most professionals. Only a few female doctors and nurses are allowed to work in some hospitals in Chinchpokali.

2- Complete ban on women's activity outside the home unless accompanied by a close male relative such as a father, brother or husband, lets call him Mr. M.

3- Ban on women dealing with male shopkeepers.

4- Ban on women being treated by male doctors. (Note that, women are not supposed to be doctors except at Chinchpokali. So if they fall ill, they should just die.)

5- Ban on women studying at schools, universities or any other educational institution. (Girls' schools should be converted into religious seminaries.)

6- Requirement that women always wear saaris, cover there faces with the pallu. Always wear Bindi, Mangalsutra etc if married. (If not married, of course they should first get married.)

7- Whipping, beating and verbal abuse of women not clothed in accordance with Sri Ram Sena rules.

8- Whipping of women in public for having non-covered ankles. (why not?)

9- Public stoning of women accused of having sex outside marriage.. (If a woman has managed an affair under these rules, shouldn't she be given a Paramvir Chakra?)

10- Ban on the use of cosmetics unless Mr. M (only from higher caste) wants to showcase his property on certain occasions.

11- Ban on women talking or shaking hands with males other than Mr. M.

12- Ban on women laughing loudly. (No stranger should hear a woman's voice). She must learn one classical singing style, but never be audible.

13- Ban on women wearing high heel shoes, which would produce sound while walking. (A man must not hear a woman's footsteps.) But women must learn a Indian cultural art form. (Dancing with Ghungharoo is encouraged for the benefit of the Indian cultured men.)

14- Ban on women riding in a taxi without Mr. M. (This is primarily because she won't be able to tell the taxi driver where she wants to go due to rule 11. And so this in particular is to save her from getting beaten up.)

15- Ban on women's presence in radio, television or public gatherings of any kind unless they are performing one of the culturally prescribed roles and they are not from lower cast.

16- Ban on women playing sports or entering a sport center or club unless they are being encouraged to do so my Sri Ram Sena members.

17- Ban on women riding bicycles or motorcycles, even with the Mr. M. This may lead to they enjoying themselves and that is primarily banned.

18- Ban on women's wearing brightly colored clothes. In Taliban terms, these are "sexually attracting colors."

19- Ban on women gathering for festive occasions or for any recreational purpose unless they are cooking for men and performing rituals prescribed by the culture rule book.

20- Ban on women washing clothes next to rivers or in a public place. But they must wash clothes. They are not allowed to discuss how they will do it. That may lead to they gossiping and this again is banned. This may make them united and that is what is banned too.

21- Modification of all place names including the word "women." For example, "women's garden" can be renamed "spring garden".

22- Ban on women appearing on the balconies of their apartments or houses.

23- Compulsory painting of all windows, so women can not be seen from outside their homes.

24- Ban on male tailors taking women's measurements or sewing women's clothes.

25- Ban on female public baths. (if that wasn't obvious from the previous rules. Rubbing it on.)

26- Women are allowed to be dev daasis as that is allowed by the Indian Culture.

and so on.... :)

Don't these sound a tad bit worse than the Taliban rules?.

Another solution could be to create three separate zones. One for males, one for females and third one for married couples. Kids are allowed to stay in third zone till age 16 (SSC). Then they have to move to either first or second zone till the time they get married. Marriages will be strictly arranged type as there is no scope for love marriage. Homosexuals and trutiyapanthis will be sent to separate zone which will be almost like jewish ghetto.

By the time I completed reading the last point, I realised I hate them more and much more :)

Why do you fuss so much about women's rights?

You are also given every civic right the males around you are getting. You enjoy a quite nice and fun life having good relations with a number of people. It is understandable when an oppressed woman fights up for rights. But I always thought you didn't have to do that.

@Mandar: Yes. While we are at it, why not?

@Uday: Absolutely!

@Anonymous: Oink!

Thanks for your Oink. But it is a tragedy of life that I would never be able to reveal myself and take up the Oink.

OMG! I don't think Ram Sene is all that extremist. Its just media blow-up over the pub issue in Mangalore. These Sene folks went there and out of josh/instinct beat up women. But, these guys were all youth - having hot blood. I don't think there was any kind of moral policing or anti-women propaganda there. Even Pramod Mutalik did not promote anything like that.

The problem is the media first of all blows up issues out of proportions, and then keeps flashing the same news again and again. This forcefully creates or rather imprints an impression onto viewers minds. Its exactly like the New Year's eve episode of 2005/2006 that happened at Gateway of India.

So, its upto us - esp the educated folks to understand this point about media blowup and not get carried away. The response has been very cheap and disgusting -- people sent pink chaddis to ram sene.

India is still a very liberal country. Esp, lot of freedom and respect for women.

Rama said, "If one has no respect for another's religion, he has no respect for his own." The reason this is true is that there is no place you can point where God is not. You can worship God with any form, animate or inanimate, or worship God the formless.

The "What next...?" demon

What next?.... When I was a kid, I always thought that there is a certain age till when this question will bother me and after that, like for my parents, things will be in order. Life will fall into a routine and I will never again be confronted with this demon called "what next?". But turns out, for our generation, there is no point of rest. The demon is a part of our life like stability was for the generation before us. This realisation is also stale by now. In fact, it has been more than a few years since I even resigned to this way of life. The time period between such a realisation and resignation was hard, I must confess. But not anymore! The confrontations with this demon are a reassurance of life itself! (feels embarrassed after having said such things....) My childish philosophies may be sounding hilarious to you (reader). (Thank me for the entertainment! You are welcome!) What I wish to announce is: for a while, I do have an answer to one such "what next...?...

Slumdog Millionaire, what's the fuss all about?

I saw the movie a few days ago. I really don't understand: why so much fuss? If an Indian director makes a fully filmy hindi movie, no one gives a damn about it. But some non-indian comes and makes this movie and people are going all ga ga about it. A.R. Rehman has given music better than "jai ho". Anil Kapur has done roles better than this. This movie has set new records in making a big deal out of a not-so-amazing movie. I say this because, even a huge fuss has been made about why there is so much fuss about this movie. That is like the second order fuss about the movie! And here, I am making the third order fuss with a huge lot accompanying me in doing so. To start the tirade-- The main guy is such a put off! He has a unique expression on his face, indicating he really has no clue what people are talking about. You are supposed to be poor, not dumb for god's sake! Even some of the witty lines are lost due to his dialog delivery. For example, when one police man say...
